What is a kundli?
A kundli (also called a janam kundli, janam patri or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born, drawn the Vedic way. It divides the sky into twelve houses, each standing for a part of life — the self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, change, fortune, career, gains and release — and shows which planet stood in which sign and house.
What your kundli shows
- Lagna (ascendant). The sign rising in the east when you were born. It sets the order of the houses and says most about your temperament and body.
- Rashi (Moon sign). The sign the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology it is at least as important as the Sun sign, and many readings are counted from it.
- Nakshatra. The lunar mansion the Moon occupied — one of 27 — with its pada (quarter). It fixes where your Vimshottari dasha begins.
- Planets in houses. Each planet's sign, degree, house and dignity: exalted, in its own sign, or debilitated.
- The running dasha. Vimshottari divides life into periods ruled by the nine planets. The mahadasha and antardasha you are in colour the years you are living.
- Sade Sati. The roughly seven and a half years when Saturn crosses the sign before your Moon, your Moon's sign and the sign after it.
North Indian or South Indian chart?
Both show the same chart. The North Indian style fixes the houses and moves the signs, so your lagna is always at the top; the South Indian style fixes the signs and moves the houses. Switch between them above the chart.
How accurate is it?
The positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India, and houses are whole signs from the lagna. The lagna moves about one sign every two hours, so the birth time matters: if yours is not known, tick the box and the chart is read from your Moon instead. More on the method.
