Saturn's nineteen years are the years of work. Saturn brings duty, delay, endurance and distance, and its period asks for everything to be earned: position through long service, money through labour, relationships through patience, health through discipline. People in a Saturn mahadasha grow older in the useful sense — more serious, more reliable, less easily fooled — and they build what lasts. The period is feared, and it is the one that makes a life solid.
For those born with the Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada the Saturn period is the first nineteen years of life — a childhood of responsibility, a strict or distant parent, early maturity — and Mercury's lighter, quicker years follow at nineteen. For everyone else it comes after Jupiter's sixteen years of increase, and it is felt as a settling of accounts: what the Jupiter years gave must now be maintained, and what was not earned is taken back.
Saturn's house from the lagna says what the nineteen years are spent on — the 10th for a career of duty, slowly climbed and long held; the 3rd, 6th or 11th for gains through persistence; the 1st, 4th, 7th or 8th for the heavier lessons of body, home, partnership and loss. Saturn's dignity (exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries) and Jupiter's aspect say how heavy the load is. Saturn–Saturn, the first three years, sets the tone; Saturn–Mercury and Saturn–Venus are the easier antardashas; Saturn–Sun, Saturn–Moon and Saturn–Mars the hardest.
What Saturn brings
Traditionally, Saturn brings duty, delay, endurance, distance. A mahadasha is that graha's turn to colour the years: the house it holds from the lagna, the houses it rules and the planets it sits with all say what its 19 years are spent on. The antardasha inside it — each of the nine grahas in turn — sets the shorter weather.
Saturn mahadasha by house
The tradition reads the period first from the house the lord holds in the birth chart, counted from the lagna in whole signs:
- 1st house. A Saturn period from the 1st is slow, heavy and maturing — the body and the self are disciplined.
- 2nd house. A Saturn period from the 2nd brings money slowly through labour and a sparing table.
- 3rd house. A Saturn period from the 3rd rewards persistence — effort pays late but pays.
- 4th house. A Saturn period from the 4th cools the home — property comes late, the mother is distant.
- 5th house. A Saturn period from the 5th delays children and makes study grave and lasting.
- 6th house. A Saturn period from the 6th defeats enemies and debt through patience and work.
- 7th house. A Saturn period from the 7th delays or sobers marriage and partnership.
- 8th house. A Saturn period from the 8th brings long burdens, slow inheritance and endurance.
- 9th house. A Saturn period from the 9th tests faith and makes fortune earned, not given.
- 10th house. A Saturn period from the 10th is a career of duty, slowly climbed and long held.
- 11th house. A Saturn period from the 11th brings gains that grow late and lasting friends.
- 12th house. A Saturn period from the 12th brings solitude, foreign residence and expense that teaches detachment.
The antardashas of Saturn
Each mahadasha is divided among the nine lords in the Vimshottari order, beginning with its own; the length of each is the mahadasha's years times the antardasha lord's, divided by 120:
| Antardasha | Length |
|---|---|
| Saturn–Saturn | 3 years 3 days |
| Saturn–Mercury | 2 years 8 months 9 days |
| Saturn–Ketu | 1 year 1 month 9 days |
| Saturn–Venus | 3 years 2 months |
| Saturn–Sun | 11 months 12 days |
| Saturn–Moon | 1 year 7 months |
| Saturn–Mars | 1 year 1 month 9 days |
| Saturn–Rahu | 2 years 10 months 6 days |
| Saturn–Jupiter | 2 years 6 months 12 days |
Who begins life in the Saturn mahadasha
Saturn rules three nakshatras. A natal Moon in any of them starts the cycle in the Saturn mahadasha, with the balance set by how far into the nakshatra the Moon stood:
- Pushya — 3°20′–16°40′ Cancer
- Anuradha — 3°20′–16°40′ Scorpio
- Uttara Bhadrapada — 3°20′–16°40′ Pisces
