Jupiter's sixteen years are the years of increase. Jupiter brings expansion, faith, teaching and generosity, and its period turns life toward what grows: children and family, learning and wisdom, wealth that comes as blessing rather than as wage, religion and law, teachers and counsel. People in a Jupiter mahadasha are more hopeful and more generous; they marry, have children, study, teach, and are given more than they ask for when Jupiter is strong.
For those born with the Moon in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada the Jupiter period is the first sixteen years of life — a protected, well-taught childhood when Jupiter is well placed — and Saturn's long, sober period follows at about sixteen. For everyone else it comes after Rahu's eighteen restless years, and it is felt as order returning: the person settles, finds a teacher or becomes one, and the ambition of the Rahu years is given a moral shape.
Jupiter's house from the lagna directs the growth — the 5th for children, wisdom and merit, the 9th for fortune and the father, the 2nd for wealth and learned speech, the 7th for marriage and counsel. Jupiter's dignity (exalted in Cancer, debilitated in Capricorn) says how freely it gives; in the 6th, 8th or 12th its generosity turns to debt, weight and expense. Jupiter–Jupiter, Jupiter–Moon and Jupiter–Venus are the blessed antardashas; Jupiter–Saturn and Jupiter–Rahu the ones that test the faith.
What Jupiter brings
Traditionally, Jupiter brings expansion, faith, teaching, generosity. A mahadasha is that graha's turn to colour the years: the house it holds from the lagna, the houses it rules and the planets it sits with all say what its 16 years are spent on. The antardasha inside it — each of the nine grahas in turn — sets the shorter weather.
Jupiter mahadasha by house
The tradition reads the period first from the house the lord holds in the birth chart, counted from the lagna in whole signs:
- 1st house. A Jupiter period from the 1st brings growth, faith and protection to the self.
- 2nd house. A Jupiter period from the 2nd brings wealth, family and learned speech.
- 3rd house. A Jupiter period from the 3rd brings slow, principled effort and helpful siblings.
- 4th house. A Jupiter period from the 4th brings home, property and a mother's blessing.
- 5th house. A Jupiter period from the 5th is the classical season for children, wisdom and merit.
- 6th house. A Jupiter period from the 6th brings debts through generosity and weight to carry.
- 7th house. A Jupiter period from the 7th brings marriage, counsel and a wise partner.
- 8th house. A Jupiter period from the 8th brings inheritance and hidden support.
- 9th house. A Jupiter period from the 9th brings fortune, teachers and the father's blessing.
- 10th house. A Jupiter period from the 10th brings honoured work — teaching, law, counsel, finance.
- 11th house. A Jupiter period from the 11th brings gains and fulfilled ambitions.
- 12th house. A Jupiter period from the 12th brings charity, distant places and quiet spending.
The antardashas of Jupiter
Each mahadasha is divided among the nine lords in the Vimshottari order, beginning with its own; the length of each is the mahadasha's years times the antardasha lord's, divided by 120:
| Antardasha | Length |
|---|---|
| Jupiter–Jupiter | 2 years 1 month 18 days |
| Jupiter–Saturn | 2 years 6 months 12 days |
| Jupiter–Mercury | 2 years 3 months 6 days |
| Jupiter–Ketu | 11 months 6 days |
| Jupiter–Venus | 2 years 8 months |
| Jupiter–Sun | 9 months 18 days |
| Jupiter–Moon | 1 year 4 months |
| Jupiter–Mars | 11 months 6 days |
| Jupiter–Rahu | 2 years 4 months 24 days |
Who begins life in the Jupiter mahadasha
Jupiter rules three nakshatras. A natal Moon in any of them starts the cycle in the Jupiter mahadasha, with the balance set by how far into the nakshatra the Moon stood:
- Punarvasu — 20°00′ Gemini – 3°20′ Cancer
- Vishakha — 20°00′ Libra – 3°20′ Scorpio
- Purva Bhadrapada — 20°00′ Aquarius – 3°20′ Pisces
